Vauxhall Gallery District
Share story
A century ago, Vauxhall was a leading arts and crafts district, populated by glassblowers, potters and sculptors. In their heyday the Pleasure Gardens were a showcase for all types of creative expression and exploration. Hung with paintings by Hogarth and Hayman, you might say they were the first public art gallery. The great Canaletto even painted the gardens and their elegant architecture. Today, the area is one of London’s hottest new arts destinations. There’s absolutely loads of exciting contemporary art happening here with a cluster of artists studios and galleries within walking distance. Come and see the burgeoning Vauxhall Gallery District for yourself.
Newport Street Gallery is Damien Hirst’s own sublime cathedral to contemporary art to house his personal collection (seriously impressive). Worth it for the stunning industrial architecture itself. Vauxhall’s pioneering contemporary art space, Beaconsfield, is recognised for its groundbreaking commissions in the former Lambeth Ragged School (also located on Newport Street). Gasworks is renowned for launching the careers of many UK and international artists whilst Charles Asprey’s Cabinet Gallery on Tyers Street has a cutting edge design that mirrors the traditional pavilions that once populated the historic gardens. And make sure you visit the other art spaces nearby; The Sunday Painter and Danielle Arnaud Gallery, Corvi-Mora and Tate Britain just across the river.
