If you’ve ever walked along Vauxhall Walk and noticed the burst of colour, the carefully tended flowerbeds, or simply felt that this stretch of London is that little bit greener, you’ve already seen Andy’s work.
Andy is the heart behind Urban Oasis Plants, a small but mighty nursery based on the corner of 16 Newport Street and Black Prince Road. For years, he’s been quietly transforming pockets of Vauxhall into something softer, brighter and more welcoming, one plant at a time. And this post is really about one thing: saying thank you.
Because while Andy might not shout about what he does, his impact on Vauxhall is impossible to miss.
A Quiet Force Behind Vauxhall’s Green Spaces
You won’t find Andy chasing likes or posting daily updates. In fact, he’ll be the first to admit social media isn’t his thing. But step outside and look around – his work speaks for itself.
This is grassroots greening at its best: hands in the soil, early mornings, long days, and a genuine love for the neighbourhood driving it all. The flowerbeds, the borders, the unexpected pockets of greenery… they don’t just happen. They’ve been built, cared for and sustained over years of dedication, and they’ve helped shape how Vauxhall feels today.
A Community Effort, Rooted in Vauxhall
Andy would also be the first to say this has never been a solo effort.
Julien has been there from the very beginning too, helping run the nursery, maintaining the borders, and keeping things going behind the scenes. Over the years, many others have lent a hand too, proving that Vauxhall’s green spaces are a true community effort.
More Than Just Greenery
What Andy has created goes far beyond landscaping. In a fast-changing part of London, these green spaces offer something grounding. They soften the streets, invite people to pause, and bring moments of calm into everyday life. They make Vauxhall feel lived-in. Looked after. Loved.
It’s the kind of work that often goes unnoticed — but without it, the neighbourhood simply wouldn’t feel the same.
What’s Next?
Urban Oasis Plants’ current site on Newport Street is set to vacate this June. The land is owned by London Fire Brigade and Andy’s tenancy there was only temporary. With redevelopment work soon to begin at Lambeth Fire Station, he’s feeling ready to move on to a new chapter. One thing is certain: Andy’s legacy, and his impact on Vauxhall, will continue to grow.
Plant Sale – Don’t Miss It
Before the site closes, there’s one more chance to support Andy and take a piece of this story home. Pop down to Vauxhall Walk this month, and you’ll find plants going at bargain prices, as Andy sells off his remaining stock ahead of the move. Or catch him at Vauxhall’s May Fair in Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, 16-17 May. Find out more here.
Whether you’re after something for your windowsill, your garden, or a gift, this is your moment.
Thank You, Andy
Vauxhall is greener, brighter and more welcoming because of you. Thank you for the years of hard work, the early starts, the muddy hands, and the care you’ve poured into this neighbourhood.
This is what community looks like, and you’ll always be part of Vauxhall’s story.
