Guided Tour: Entrepreneurial Vauxhall

Alongside Vauxhall’s reputation as a destination for performance sits the area’s history as a place of innovation and enterprise. This guided walk, led by a knowledgeable local from Lambeth Tour Guides Association, charts the industry and activity that often co-existed with balloon ascents, marvellous musicians and the captivating characters at the Pleasure Gardens.

Firing up next to the performers and promenades were potteries and factories, notably Doulton’s, where art and technology combined to produce wares for the building industry as well as for the table and mantelpiece. On the ground, dazzling illuminations drew crowds; up in the air, the tale of a record-breaking journey to Germany continued to enthrall for years after.

By 1859 the pleasures of the Gardens were gone; by 1956 the factories had powered down. But the legends and stories live on. Join this fascinating two-hour walk and be fired up by the enterprise, and enterprising, of Vauxhall.
