An Evening With David Hoyle

The original cabaret icon and performance legend is back at his spiritual home, the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, for an intimate and very special evening. The night will see David in conversation, spanning topics across his life and career with room for questions from the audience. The second half will then see David take to the stage to perform in a way that’s only possible at the safe haven of the RVT. Termed by Justin Vivian Bond as ‘the greatest living performer,’ it’s really not something you’ll want to miss.

Friday 12th

The Garden Cafe’s Tour de France: Burgundy

Throughout the months of January and February, the Garden Museum’s lush and tranquil cafe is being transformed into a space to explore and celebrate regional French cooking. Kicking off with one of France’s main wine-producing areas, Burgundy, Friday nights will see head chef Myles take guests through a tour of some of his favourite French provinces. For a fixed price, three courses will showcase the authentic cuisine and traditional dishes that have inspired Myles’s cooking over the years. This first dinner will explore some of the lesser-known dishes of Burgundian cuisine alongside a small wine list that showcases the region’s most exciting young producers.

6.00pm | Garden Cafe, SE1 7LB | £29

Opening with a warm-up and an introduction to the techniques of walks and movement, you’ll then be taken through some key choreography that you’ll be able to take home and practice. It’s a great way to get your body moving after a month of festive indulgence while still keeping the party going!

Cyanotype Workshop

What is the beginning of the New Year for if not learning a new skill? With this one-day workshop on cyanotype, you’ll be able to do exactly that this January. Cyanotype is a creative, simple, and flexible photographic print process that produces a characteristic and beautiful blue image when coated sensitised paper is exposed to light. Throughout the course of the day, you’ll be taken through the basic principles of how to prepare a photo for making a negative, how to measure and mix the chemicals and correctly coat the paper, how to explore the paper with the negative, and finally how to develop, dry, and assess the finished print.

10.00am – 4.00pm | Bainbridge Print Vauxhall, SE11 3RB | £95

Saturday 20th

Dare to Draw – Drawing Course

Are you an urban designer or town planner looking to brush up on your drawing skills for urban planning? Or simply an aspiring artist looking to capture London’s architecture? This one-day drawing course in January will teach you the foundations of hand drawing for those who have little or no hand drawing experience. It’s a failsafe way to gain confidence in producing hand drawings for meetings, presentations, design codes, and planning documents. Led by architectural technician, Mark Shepherd, the course also includes a month of feedback time where delegates can submit their work for evaluation and critique to encourage an ongoing process of improvement.

First & Quirky Vauxhall Walk

Grab your camera and buckle in for a surprising walk of two halves which meanders through Vauxhall’s leafy village back streets to its modern riverside skyscrapers along the River Thames. Covering a wide range of topics including sporting, transport, political, and architectural firsts, it’s a great way to brush up on your local knowledge. The walk is about 3 miles long and will take you through the parks, gardens, model villages, and famous film sets that make Vauxhall so unique. Rest breaks will be built into the journey and the iconic Black Dog pub is the cosy and warm final frontier for a chat and Q&A to round off the day.

Blind Debate

A firm crowd favourite, the blind debate is back this January at Tea House Theatre for a riveting evening of quickfire debate. Settle in and watch speakers prepare for a motion they’ve never seen in 30 minutes and without any access to the internet. Teams are forced to be creative with their arguments as they debate topics as varied as Cat vs Dogs, Computer Games in the Olympics, and Vegetables are Tastier than Fruit. Sit back and watch the speakers fight to get your votes and answer your questions in the audience Q&A round. It’s an evening of light-hearted entertainment at an iconic cosy, local, neighbourhood spot.
