Monica Sjöö Exhibition at Beaconsfield Gallery

Beaconsfield Gallery welcomes a new exhibition by Swedish artist and activist Monica Sjöö (1938-2005). As a powerful political voice, Sjöö’s work combines fierce ecological sentiment with a defiance of patriarchy through a celebration of the rituals of Goddess cultures. Anger is beautifully and poignantly expressed at the often intertwined violence inflicted on the environment and against women. The exhibition will show 56 largely unseen paintings and mixed media drawings and place them in a contemporary context alongside a programme of performances, workshops, reading groups, and symposia by contemporary artists and writers invited to respond to Sjöö’s life and work. Contributing artists and writers include Sally Pomme Clayton, Katy Deepwell, Rachel Fallon, Caitlin Fleming, and Rachel Garfield. See the gallery’s website for a full list.
