January is here, and it’s the perfect time to embrace the outdoors and explore the wonderful parks and riverside walks right on our doorstep in Vauxhall. Walking is one of the simplest ways to boost your physical and mental health—and we’re so fortunate to have access to such fantastic green spaces and the beautiful River Thames.

The benefits of walking are well-documented: it’s great for cardiovascular health, strengthens bones, improves balance, and can even elevate your mood. Just a brisk 30-minute walk each day can make a significant difference. And in Vauxhall, we have a wealth of places to enjoy this healthy habit.

Vauxhall Park

Vauxhall Park is an 8.5-acre Green Flag award-winning oasis right in the heart of the city. Its beautifully maintained lavender field, model village and ‘human’ sundial provide something unique for everyone. Whether you’re walking solo, meeting friends for a coffee at the café, or enjoying the fresh air with your family, it’s a space designed to relax and inspire.

Historically, the park also has a special significance. Henry Fawcett, who lived near the park’s current tennis courts, believed in the importance of freely accessible open spaces for public health and well-being. His wife, Millicent Fawcett, a leading Suffragette, along with Octavia Hill and local residents, made his vision a reality in 1890. Their foresight continues to benefit the Vauxhall community today.

Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens

For a dose of history alongside your stroll, head to Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens. This iconic space has been a part of London’s cultural fabric since 1729, when Jonathan Tyers turned it into a hub of British art and entertainment. Today, it’s a peaceful retreat filled with flora and fauna, perfect for a gentle wander or a more energetic walk. Keep an eye out for the wildlife that calls the gardens home, such as the White-letter hairstreak butterflies that visit in the summer months.

Pedlar’s Park

Looking for a quieter spot? Pedlar’s Park is a hidden gem in Vauxhall. This small but charming park has a rich history, evolving from the site of St Saviours Salamanca Street National School to a tranquil public space in the 1960s. Expanded in 2006, it now includes the nearby Salamanca open space, named after the Duke of Wellington’s victory in the 1812 Battle of Salamanca. Locals describe it as a great spot to unwind, reflect, and take in the views—especially during winter.

Riverside Walks Along the Thames

One of the greatest perks of living or working in Vauxhall is proximity to the River Thames. The riverside paths offer stunning views and a chance to connect with the city’s history while stretching your legs. Whether you’re walking east towards Battersea Park or west along Albert Embankment, the Thames provides a refreshing backdrop to any outing.

Embrace the Outdoors

As we begin 2025, make it a resolution to get out of the house and explore the natural beauty surrounding us in Vauxhall. These parks and riverside paths aren’t just places to visit—they’re sanctuaries for improving our well-being. So lace up your walking shoes, grab a warm drink and take advantage of these incredible local spaces. Your body and mind will thank you.
