Jonathan Tyers established Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens on the south bank of the Thames in 1729, bringing employment, light and bustling activity to a place that had previously been disreputable and murky.

The riverside location allowed access from all parts of the city.

Music, dancing, eating and drinking were accompanied by regular fireworks, operas, masquerades and illuminations. Whilst the site had been a place for Londoners to gather and buy refreshments since the 1660s, Tyers realised there was a market for paid entertainment. An entry fee meant Tyers’ patrons expected to rub shoulders with the upper classes of London. Vauxhall’s questionable reputation remained, the business of the gardens enticing pickpockets and prostitutes.
