Sarah Hengler was one of the first female firework makers and a renowned pyrotechnician at Vauxhall.
Whilst regular firework displays were introduced during the 1798 season, Sarah and her husband, circus performer John Michael Hengler put on several firework displays at Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens between 1978-1825. However, Sarah only began working at Vauxhall in 1803, a year after her husband’s death.
Remembered for the spectacular crown of fireworks worn on her head, which captured the attention of Charles Dickens and poet Thomas Hood, Sarah also ran a fireworks factory near Westminster Bridge, which became home to several fireworks producers in the 19th century due to the close proximity to Vauxhall Gardens. Fireworks were rightly considered a dangerous trade; Sarah Hengler died during a fire at her factory in October 1845.
