In 1842, a series of new acts arrived at Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, among them French performer Mademoiselle Caroline.
One of the greatest women in Vauxhall’s history, she was a famously graceful equestrienne, an extraordinary horse trainer who was celebrated across Europe for her talent. She specialised in training her horses to obey her every command, getting them to rear up delicately on their hind legs and even training them to pirouette with her in a waltz. An article from a contemporary periodical newspaper published in August 1842 describes the horse trainer’s equestrian achievements as beautiful, and the woman herself as a graceful, wonderful lady.
