Canton Arms - 177 South Lambeth Road, SW8 If you’ve ever eaten in the award-winning @cantonarms, you probably already worship at the altar of their Sunday Roast lunches. For those who haven’t enrolled themselves in the cult of this scruffy-looking boozer, let us tell you more... In 2010, Aussie chef and writer Trish Hilferty (ex-The Eagle and The Anchor & Hope) took over the pub. Her daily menu is full of pared-down British and European flavours. Like the place itself, the cooking is no-nonsense and to the point, with flavours coming first and foremost. After the gastropub classics, may we also suggest the Salt Marsh lamb, rabbit and smoked ham pie bubble or a ginger and turmeric gelato. There is also rabbit offal on toast, for the more adventurous. Although did you know the person responsible for the elaborate fireworks displays at the Pleasure Gardens was a woman? Sarah Hengler was her name, and fireworks became her game! Wife of German former artilleryman-turned-pyrotechnist Johannes Michael Engler, aka John Michael Hengler when he came to England; Madame Hengler took over the firework business after his death and made a name for herself by walking a tightrope through the displays and supplied fireworks to the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens until her retirement in 1825. Let us shine a light on @brunswick_house. Built in 1758 for the Duke of Brunswick, the antique-filled Georgian mansion takes on many different guises across its four floors. There's a cafe, cocktail bar, restaurant, outdoor terrace, intimate & romantic private rooms for eating and celebrating and a historic vaulted cellar bar with a list of wines so rare we daren't ever ask the prices. But it is the food created by Jackson Boxer, whose Vauxhall heritage is so rich he could run for Mayor of Vauxhall, that puts this establishment head and shoulders above the rest. His brilliance in creating outstanding menus with a keen focus on using British sourced produce goes into making Brunswick House so popular.
